Welcome to the website of the Mansfield & Ashfield Local Members' Group of the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.

Our role as a local group is to support the work of the main BadgerNottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, the largest environmental charity in the county. We are a group of locals who are enthusiastic, rather than expert, about the environment and wildlife in and around our area of Nottinghamshire. Within the Mansfield and Ashfield area our local group has over 1,600 members.

There are several important Trust reserves, as well as many Local Nature Reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest, within our area. Look back to old maps and you will see large parts of the Mansfield and Ashfield areas lying within the ancient forest of Sherwood. The forest was a mixed area of woodland, heathland, farms, villages and towns. Man’s hand has changed the landscape considerably since early times but, if you know where to look, our area has some wonderful sites for wildlife, including:-

Leopard Slug

The former pit tip which is a blaze of orchids in June

Forestry woodland areas where nightjars churr throughout the night

Rich meadows with ancient badger setts

Cunningly concealed ponds that are home to the protected great crested newt and much more!

Each year our local group organises a lively and popular programme of events, including illustrated talks and demonstrations, along with walks around some of our lovely local sites. Why not come along and join us!
