MAUN VALLEY PARK LNR (SK549 362).

The river Maun runs the length of the site, which is effectively split in two by New Mill Lane. The southern section contains amenity grassland with islands of hawthorn scrub and trees, which has been planted recently to act as shelterbelts. A steep escarpment to the east overlooks the river and the large water treatment works, this escarpment holds ancient woodland, which is dominated by Oak (Quercus spp).

The northern section of the park is predominately amenity grassland. In some of these areas the mowing regime has recently been changed to once a year in order to allow for creation of a more varied meadow habitat. The river is flanked by hawthorn and willow scrub, although unfortunately this is not continuous. Along some of it’s length the river has been canalised to prevent flooding.

Surveys for both Water Vole and White-clawed Crayfish have proved negative, but the site has had over 100 species of birds recorded including breeding Turtle Dove, Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail, Grasshopper Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher, Marsh and Willow Tit, Tree Sparrow, Linnet, Bullfinch, Yellowhammer, and Reed Bunting. With waders such as Ruff, Green and Common Sandpipers seen especially during autumn passage.
