Trouble in Paradise (well Warsop)

The last full week in May saw some controversy in Warsop over the proposed Local Nature Reserve on the Carrs.

Six electors in the Parish took some disliking to parts of the management plan that had been proposed by NWT, MDC and EH. This amounted to a dislike of the untidy appearance of the area along side the river that has been left to become meadow.

Under the regulations that govern the Parish Council there was no option but to hold the meeting which due to the numbers of people who turned up at the Warsop Town Hall had to be adjourned and relocated to the Oaklands Centre on Oakfield Ave.

It has to be said the main proponent of the meeting and the person behind the proposal that the Parish hold a poll of electors to ask the question “Do you want the Carrs to be designated a Nature Reserve”, some what lost his way and admitted to the meeting he did not acually oppose the plan per se only parts of the management plan. As such he totally lost credibility with the whole meeting and was to my view unable to give a valid arguement against the meadow area other than it looked untidy.

The Chair of the Parish Council pointed out that to hold such a referendum would cost in excess of £4000, money the Parish did not have in its budget and that to borrow this amount would mean an increase in the precept for next year. Now whilst this should not be a reason not to hold a poll on a valid and important point affecting the people of Warsop it was also pointed out that the Carrs is owned and managed entirely by Mansfield District Council and any descision by the Parish could be overruled by the District.

After an hour or so of very passionate speakers had their say (most for the LNR) a vote was taken. The result was that even half of the original 6 who signed their name to the proposal failed to vote for it. Out of more than 100 people present only 3 voted in favour of the referendum. Was this a waste of time? If you attended the meeting pehaps you will drop us a line and let us know your feelings for posting on our web site.
